The Khosravi Leather Factory in Tabriz holds significant historical importance as a representative of Iran's early industrial era. After its renovation and repurposing as part of the Islamic Art University of Tabriz, the factory building became an integral part of the university campus. This study focuses on the dynamic behavior of the industrial chimney within this complex, which is a tall and slender structure vulnerable to seismic forces. Furthermore, considering the location of Tabriz in a high seismic hazard area and its proximity to the North Tabriz Fault, the importance of studying these buildings is felt more than ever.In this article, the previously implemented seismic retrofitting technique, which involved the installation of metal rings around the chimneys, is thoroughly examined. First, through Operational Modal dynamic testing, the behavior and effectiveness of this retrofitting technique are investigated in detail. The tests were conducted twice: once with the rings in place and subsequently after their removal to eliminate residual pressure effects, conducting the test on the main structure without retrofit. Also, the effectiveness of the ring was investigated with an FEM model and pushover analysis, and the results from different positions of the rings are compared. Based on the test results and observed frequency changes and pushover analysis results, it is evident that this retrofitting technique did not achieve the desired improvement in structural performance.This article offers valuable insights into the seismic assessment of industrial chimneys and critically evaluates the effectiveness of retrofitting techniques, utilizing the Khosravi Leather Factory as a case study.
