قدمت مساجد ستوندار چوبی به اوایل دوره اسلامی بازمی‌گردد. در دوران امپراتوری سلجوقی که بیش از ۱۵۷ سال بر حوزه جغرافیایی ایران بزرگ، آسیای مرکزی، قفقاز و آناتولی تسلط داشت، فرم خاصی از مساجد چوبی شبستانی پدید آمد که بعدها به‌عنوان منبع الهام در معماری مذهبی این مناطق مطرح گردید. اوج شکوفایی این نوع معماری در آناتولی طی قرون ۱۳ و ۱۴ میلادی و در ایران در دوره‌های صفوی (قرون ۱۶ تا 18 میلادی) رقم خورد. هدف پژوهش حاضر، گونه‌شناسی مساجد چوبی نفیس واقع در دو منطقه آذربایجان شرقی ایران و آناتولی (ترکیه) است که تحت تاثیر مساجد چوبی آسیای میانه و معماری بومی این مناطق شکل یافته‌اند. شاخص‌ترین ویژگی این مساجد، استفاده از ستونهای چوبی با سرستونهای مقرنس‌‌کاری همراه با سقفهای چوبی نقاشی شده است که از منظر فنون ساخت، مصالح، چیدمان ستونها و جهت‌گیری فضایی، تفاوتهای قابل توجهی میان آنها وجود دارد. با تحلیل بیش از 50 نمونه مسجد از طریق مطالعات کتابخانه‌ای و میدانی، گونه‌بندی کلی بر اساس جهت‌گیری تیرهای اصلی شبستان به دو گروه اصلی تفکیک گردید: نخست، شبستان ستوندار چوبی با تیرهای موازی محور قبله که با استفاده از معیارهای تأکید فضایی بر قبله (نظیر حضور گنبدخانه در فراز محراب و افزایش دهانه روبروی آن)، تعداد ستونهای مقابل دیوار قبله (زوج یا فرد) و موقعیت محراب نسبت به ستونها، نوع مصالح دیوارها و وجود یا فقدان ستون‌آوند  به پنج ریزگونه تقسیم‌بندی شد. فراوانی این گونه که تحت تاثیر پلانهای باسیلیکایی کلیساهای بیزانس شکل گرفته، در آناتولی بیشتر است؛ دوم، شبستان ستوندار با تیرهای اصلی عمود بر محور قبله که بر اساس تعداد ستونهای مقابل دیوار قبله (زوج یا فرد)، جنس مصالح و وجود یا فقدان ستون‌آوند به پنج ریزگونه تفکیک شده و بیشتر در ایران مشاهده می‌شود.
