نظر به دیدگاه نوربرگ شولتز، هویت معماری شهرهای باستانی بین چهار الگوی کیهانی، رمانتیک، کلاسیک و مرکب تقسیم و روح مکان شهرهای اسلامی در گستره شهرهای کیهانی قرار می گیرد. اما آیا  شهرهای ایرانی-اسلامی همه داری روح کیهانی هستند؟ الگوی آن ها با توجه به الگوی ساختاری نظریه شولتز چیست؟آیا ابعاد فرهنگی و معنایی ناشی از بستر محیطی را هم می-توان در محیط¬های اسلامی پذیرفت و تسری داد؟ در این تحقیق تلاش شده با بازنگری در نظریه روح مکان و بررسی شهرهای ایران الگوی آن ها کشف و بومی سازی شود. در فرایند طراحی  استفاده از الگوهای بومی منطقه کمک شایانی به باززنده سازی هویت مکان می کند، هویتی که امروزه با توجه به گسترش طراحی¬های غیر مربوط در حال کمرنگ تر شدن است. پژوهش حاضر با بهره گیری از مطالعات میان‌رشته‌ای به‌صورت کیفی، پدیدارشناسی و کتابخانه ای و ارتباط با مطالعات اقلیمی، منظر، شهرسازی و تأثیر روانشناسی بر این مؤلفه‌ها تلاش می کند روح مکان موجود در شهرهای ایرانی-اسلامی را معرفی و بدین ترتیب تئوری شولتز را مورد بازبینی قرار دهد. در این پژوهش شهرهای ایرانی در چهارچوب نظریه شولتز بررسی و گونه شناسی این شهرها از دو منظر موضع شناسی و سیماشناسی صورت می گیرد؛ در حقیقت ساختار این نظریه ظرفی برای تعریف هویت اسلامی شهرها است. نتایج حاکی از آن است که هر چهار الگو در شهرهای ایرانی- اسلامی قابل‌تعریف است و تحت تأثیر عواملی چون اقلیم شهر، اعتقادات و فرهنگ، تمدن و شهرسازی گذشته شکل گرفته است. در این میان باغشهر صفوی با داشتن روح مکان مرکب، به‌عنوان یک آرمانشهر برای شهرهای ایرانی- اسلامی الگو است.
